The Howard University Transportation Research Center (HUTRC) was established in 1998 and is housed in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences at Howard University. The HUTRC serves as a standing research resource for assisting the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT), its primary sponsor, in fulfilling its mission of providing quality and efficient transportation-related services to the residents and visitors of Washington, DC.
Since its inception, HUTRC’s activities have included the participation of faculty from the Departments of Architecture Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Business Administration in a variety of projects, in the form of research or investigations.
The HUTRC utilizes undergraduate and graduate students on sponsored projects conducted at the Center.
The HUTRC promotes the advancement of engineering and policy research in support of the transportation needs of the urban metropolitan environment. The HUTRC supports the continued academic advancement of the University’s faculty and its graduate fellows through their participation as research associates, project managers and team members on research projects of disciplinary and interdisciplinary significance. The HUTRC provides information dissemination, acting as clearinghouse on publications and documents developed by the Center in fulfilling its overall mission.
Mission
The HUTRC mission is to promote and conduct transportation research, educational, and outreach activities, and to provide a better understanding of urban transportation needs through investigative research and training in engineering, management planning and policy.
Objectives
- Support the broad mission of DDOT, its primary sponsor is to enhance the quality of life for District residents and visitors by ensuring that people, goods, and information move efficiently and safely, with minimal adverse impacts on residents and the environment.
- Encourage innovation and to support and promote new technologies, practices and procedures to better serve the residents of the District of Columbia.
- Support DDOT’s multi-modal Transportation Programs and Policies. Educate and prepare students for careers in Transportation.
- Provide extension and outreach services to the public and private sector organizations.
